A recent study* showed that there is no statistically significant difference in the results of treating melomental folds (marionette lines) with either Botox or Dysport. The study results showed that both produced equal improvements.
Sabrina G. Fabi, M.D., and her colleagues conducted a single-center study of 20 women with a mean age of 56.4 years. These women had moderate to several marionette lines when at rest.
The study was randomized. Patients received an injection of 10 units of Dysport on one side of their face, with four units of Botox on the other side. During the study, Botox was identified as OBA, while Dysport was identified as ABO.
Patients and evaluators assed the melomental folds at rest and at maximal contractions at several points in the study — baseline, then at days 14, 42, 90, and 120, after the treatments.
For the study a mean severity score of the facial lines were determined by an investigator. These facial lines were measured at rest and in a contracted state.
The investigators then studied the folds at week 8 to determine a mean fold severity score. During this part of the study it was determined that neither side saw statistically significant differences.
At week 16, an improvement in the melomental fold severity score was maintained when compared to the baseline measurements. Interestingly, the patient self-assessment scores indicated they say improvement in the OBA-treat side during weeks 2 and 6. The study findings concluded that there was no significant statistical difference experienced between the OBA- and ABO-treated sides in any of the evaluation categories.
Dr. Wright, medical director of Laser Lipo and Vein Center says, “The findings of this study are very interesting. As the statistics show generally no difference in the results of both Botox and Dysport, patients have a choice of products that both produce the results they desire.”
