Managing Expectations: When Liposuction is Not Enough

Liposuction

Many people are fighting the “fat battle,” trying to lose those pesky pounds to get rid of those unwanted rolls, bulges, and other not-so-attractive fat deposits. We know how much our self-esteem and self-confidence rest upon our own self-image. Sure, you may only have a few bulges and are at your ideal weight, which you achieved through hard work, diet, and exercise, yet there are those rolls and bulges that will just not go away, no matter how hard you work.

One of the best benefits of today’s modern liposuction is that it can easily get rid of those unwanted bulges to give you a more contoured look. So, you decided to undergo the simple, relatively pain-free procedure and you come away with a more contoured figure. But it just isn’t enough. What can you do?

Examine Your Liposuction Expectations

One of the first things you should do BEFORE undergoing the procedure is manage your liposuction expectations. You should realize that modern liposuction techniques are not a weight loss solution, nor are they designed to remove large quantities of fat. Liposuction is most effective in eliminating pesky fat deposits that just won’t go away, no matter how many spin classes or kick boxing classes you take.

Also, you may be expecting tighter, firm skin that doesn’t have stretch marks or cellulite. This may not be the case. Some patients with thin, soft skin may develop sagging in the treatment areas. There are some treatments that can help eliminate that sagging skin that can be done after liposuction, or some liposuction techniques (such as laser lipo) can provide more effective results.

Another expectation is that liposuction will help with muscle weakness in the abdomen, so that you will have better definition. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Women who have a lot of loose skin and abdominal wall weakness may benefit from a tummy tuck, rather than liposuction.
