When you undergo liposuction, it is almost certain that you will be instructed to wear compression garments for a period of time during your liposuction recovery. Compression garments provide compression to liposuction areas for several reasons, including:
• Reduction in possible post-operative bleeding
• Reduce swelling
• Assist in healing
The compression garments can also reduce any bruising that may occur due to liposuction. Also, during the tumescent liposuction technique, there may be some incisions that encourage drainage of the tumescent liquid/solution. Compression garments will also help with either the drainage or absorption of this solution (depending upon the technique used by the physician).
Wearing compression garments after liposuction, in addition to faster healing, will also ensure that your results are smooth and even. The garments will prevent bumps or lumps from forming in the treatment area during the recovery time.
In most cases, you will be required to wear the garments at all times (except for bathing or showering) for a period of time. After that initial period, you may be required to continue wearing the garments for shorter periods of time each day.
What Are Compression Garments?
Most compression garments are made from some type of elastic cloth, similar to that used for girdles. Some garments are made from a Lycra type material. They come in a variety of styles and sizes and your physician will make sure that you are give instructions for the best choice for your individual case.
The time you have to wear these garments will depend on the type of liposuction you undergo as well as the location. It is also important that your garments fit properly, as too much or not enough pressure can be detrimental to your healing and results.
