There are many people who seek that flat stomach, but it seems no amount of diet and exercise are producing the results they want. Often these people turn to abdominal liposuction to give them that sleeker look.

When looking at the procedures, the satisfaction of the patient is paramount. There are many factors that can affect the success of liposuction including:

  • Amount and location of fat – Fat can occur at two levels, superficial or deep. Fat that is found below the skin is superficial and can be successfully removed by liposuction. Deep fat is located within the abdominal cavity and cannot be removed safely through liposuction. Only diet and exercise can remove this type of fat.
  • Past history of weight gain or loss – Weight loss after obesity creates more fibrous fat deposits, making lipo difficult. There can be loose skin from this weight loss that can affect the appearance
  • Previous pregnancies – Pregnancies can stretch the abdominal muscles and create bulges.
  • Female patients have less fibrous, softer fat than men, making liposuction easier to perform on women.

The Abdominal Tumescent Liposuction Procedure

Tumescent liposuction is a very successful and safe liposuction procedure. This procedure uses a diluted lidocaine solution that acts as a local anesthetic, and epinephrine that will shrink the capillaries temporarily to reduce bruising and bleeding. This solution is injected through tiny incisions. The fat is then removed using micro-cannulas and gentle suction to remove the fat.

After the procedure, you will wear compression garments that will help create the your new shape and reduce swelling. These garments will also help skin tighten around the treatment area.

You may experience some minor discomfort that is generally treated with over-the-counter medication. Most patients are able to return to their normal routines the next day.

Risks of Abdominal Liposuction

You will be evaluated prior to the procedure to see if you are at risk for complications due to health issues. These can include:

  • Abdominal hernia, which carries the risk of accidental penetration of the abdominal cavity.
  • Previous liposuction procedures often cause scarring, making a second procedure more difficult.
  • Previous abdominal surgery
  • Previous laparoscopic procedures
  • Radiation therapy

Your physician will go over all of the risks with you during your pre-op consultation. This consultation will also allow you to discuss the benefits of liposuction, as well as determine your desired results.
