Because skin cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer, many people are concerned about whether a mole is cancerous or not. In general, most moles are harmless; however, many people may fall into high risk groups, such as those who are fair-haired/fair-skinned, spend a lot of time in the sun, or have a family history of skin cancer. As was stated, most moles are benign and not dangerous. However, if you see a change in a mole or it becomes painful or itchy, it is important to have your moles checked by a physician immediate.
Skin Cancer Detection in Moles: Check Yourself
It is important to do a self-check of your moles monthly, especially if you are in a high risk group. This way of getting your moles checked is the first line of defense as catching skin cancer early. The best time to do a self-check is after a shower or bath. If you have a full-length mirror available, this can help you check your moles over your entire body. Make sure to check areas that may be hidden, such as the soles of your feet or behind your knees.
When examining your moles, use the ABCDEs of skin cancer detection in moles:
- Asymmetry: one half of the mole does not match the other half
- Border: the border or edges of the mole are ragged, blurred or irregular
- Color: the mole has different colors or it has shades of tan, brown, black, blue, white or red
- Diameter: the diameter of the mole is larger than 6mm
- Elevation: the mole appears elevated or raised from the skin
If you do see changes or moles that exhibit one or more of the ABCDEs, have it checked by a doctor as soon as possible. When caught early skin cancer can be easily treated.
