Recently, there has been an increase in using the fat transfer technique during facial rejuvenation procedures.
With the facial aging process, we see not only a skin problem, but also changes in all layers of the face (fat, bone, and skin). There are many factors which cause facial aging; however, not all are completely understood. Over time, the skin can become thinner through the loss of collagen and causes a loss of elasticity.
We do understand that facial fat, which is affected by aging, is not composed of a single mass — it actually has many different compartments that are separated by depth and barriers.
Treating these compartments with fillers is not new; however, bioengineered or artificial fillers can result in complications such as granulomas and asymmetry.
Recent studies have suggested that when fat transfer is used in the deep compartments of the face, it acts as a powerful method to add and restore volume to the face. It is also been proven to be an ideal alternative to artificial or bioengineered fillers.
Fat transfer and its “lift-and-fill” techniques provide high levels of success in augmenting many areas of the face to provide an overall more youthful appearance.
In addition, the fat transfer procedure is far more permanent than artificial fillers and offers the potential for cell rejuvenation of the skin. Additionally, since a patient’s own fat cells are being introduced into the face, there is no risk of rejection or allergic reaction.
The Fat Transfer Procedure
During the fat transfer procedure, a patient’s fat is harvested and treated. It is then placed into areas that the patient wants to have enhanced, plumped, or otherwise rejuvenated. It can be used not only for facial rejuvenation, but also as a successful method for butt or breast enhancements.
