Why Late Summer Is the Ideal Time to Start Vein Treatment

August has a way of sneaking up on people. One minute it’s the middle of summer, and the next you’re looking at a calendar full of fall weddings, school events, holiday parties, and family gatherings, many of which involve dressing up in ways that make you think twice about visible veins.

If you have been putting off treatment for varicose or spider veins, late summer is actually one of the smartest times to start. Here’s why timing matters more than most people realize.

The Problem With Waiting Until Fall

Many patients wait until cooler weather to think about vein treatment, assuming it makes more sense once shorts and swimsuits are packed away. But that thinking can backfire.

Most vein treatments, including sclerotherapy and laser therapy, require a recovery window before results are fully visible. Depending on the treatment and the number of sessions needed, that process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months.

If you wait until October to book your first appointment, you may still be mid-treatment when the holidays arrive, not exactly ideal timing for the season of family photos and festive outfits.

Starting Now Gives You a Head Start

By beginning treatment in late summer, you give yourself a realistic runway before the fall event season ramps up. This is especially helpful if you are treating:

  • Varicose veins in the legs, which may require multiple sessions spaced weeks apart
  • Spider veins, which typically respond well to sclerotherapy but still need time between treatments
  • Larger or more visible veins, which may benefit from a combination approach

Starting in August also means you’re less likely to be treating veins right before a big event, like a wedding, when bruising or mild swelling from a recent session could be inconvenient.

What Vein Treatment Actually Involves

At our St. Louis area practice, treatment plans are tailored to the type, size, and location of the veins involved. Two of the most common approaches are:

Sclerotherapy

A solution is injected directly into the affected vein, causing it to collapse and gradually fade from view. This is often used for spider veins and smaller varicose veins. Most patients need more than one session for optimal results, typically spaced four to six weeks apart.

Laser Vein Treatment

Targeted laser energy is used to close off problem veins from the outside, without needles. This can be a good option for smaller surface veins or for patients who prefer a non-injection approach.

For larger or more complex varicose veins, additional evaluation may be needed to rule out underlying venous insufficiency, a circulation issue that can cause veins to become enlarged and visible in the first place.

Why Underlying Vein Health Matters

Visible veins are sometimes just a cosmetic concern, but they can also be a sign of a deeper circulation issue. Symptoms like aching, heaviness, swelling, or throbbing in the legs, especially after standing for long periods, can point to venous insufficiency.

This is one reason a proper evaluation matters before starting treatment. Addressing the root cause, not just the visible vein, leads to better and longer-lasting results.

What to Expect at Your Consultation

During your first visit, Dr. Wright’s team will:

  1. Review your medical history and any symptoms you’ve noticed, such as leg heaviness or swelling
  2. Perform a visual and, if needed, ultrasound evaluation of the affected veins
  3. Discuss which treatment approach, or combination of approaches, fits your specific situation
  4. Build a realistic timeline based on your goals, including any upcoming events you’re hoping to be ready for

This is also the time to ask questions about recovery, expected number of sessions, and what results you can realistically expect. Vein treatment can help reduce the appearance of visible veins and associated discomfort, though individual results vary.

A Note on Recovery Timing

Most patients can return to normal daily activities quickly after sclerotherapy or laser treatment, though your provider may recommend avoiding intense exercise or prolonged sun exposure on treated areas for a short period. Compression stockings are often recommended after treatment to support healing and improve outcomes.

Because bruising and mild swelling are common in the days following treatment, spacing sessions out ahead of a big event, rather than right before it, tends to produce the best experience.

Plan Ahead for Fall With Confidence

Late summer offers a practical window to start treatment before the busy season hits. Whether you’re preparing for a fall wedding, a milestone event, or simply want to feel more comfortable in your own skin before sweater and boot season, now is a smart time to get started.
