A recent study published in the professional publication Plastic Reconstructive Surgery showed that a fat grafting (fat transfer) technique known as compartmentally-based fat grafting restored facial volume and also had a high level of patient satisfaction. Study researchers developed a grafting procedure that used the physiologic distribution of the facial fat. Additionally, it changed the volume in certain facial compartments. The study entailed studying a total of 78 women who were treated for cheek atrophy using the procedure.
During the study, clinicians separated the different areas of the cheek fat compartment. They then observed the vein that runs from the medial cheek fat compartment to the buccal fat pad. Each of the study participants received a graft of 29.3mL of volume of fat. The results were studied at the 12-month mark and saw results of cheek augmentation at an average of 27.1%.
At this research point, the researchers observed “pleasing and elevated anterior projection of the cheek along with ameliorated nasolabial groove.” What this essentially shows is that the cheeks experienced a satisfactory increase in volume, and lines around the nose and mouth were decreased.
Says Dr. Thomas Wright, medical director at the Laser Lipo and Vein Center in St. Louis, “I find these results great news. At the Laser Lipo and Vein Center, this is one of our most popular procedures to increase volume in age-related facial rejuvenation.” He continues, “Not only does the study show that the results are long-lasting, but are potentially higher in satisfaction than was previously thought.”
The Fat Transfer Procedure
Essentially, the fat transfer procedure entails harvesting fat from another part of your body, such as the abdomen or other area that may have excess fat. This fat is then processed to remove the healthiest fat cells. These cells are then transferred to the treatment area, in this case the face to augment and plump the area.
This cheek augmentation procedure is especially beneficial, as it has fewer side effects than other options, such as risk of allergic reaction. The results are also far more natural looking and feeling that those produced by artificial fillers.
