There’s a big trend arising due to its popularity on social media—fuller lips. You are probably seeing a lot of celebrities and other media stars with their pouty lips. A new study is providing some very interesting insights into this new popularity of full lips.
The study, recently published as a research letter in the JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery journal, shows that women are showing a preference for full lips. The team of researchers was led by Dr. Prem Tripathi of the University of California-Irvine and attributed the rise in popularity to changing demographics of both models/celebrities and the consumer public. Another factor was that injectable lip fillers have become safe and inexpensive.
Basis and Procedure
The study pointed out that the fashion world often plays a role in determining the type of cosmetic procedures women may seek. One interesting fact pointed out by the research is that the fashion industry no longer drives certain beauty trends, but rather celebrities and those in the spotlight are driving those trends.
The study’s foundation is formed on the fact that opinions are formed by the “tastemakers” of our society; therefore, the researchers decided to examine lip size trends in print media, particularly Vogue magazine.
The researchers examined the lip sizes of models appearing in the magazine from 1960 to 2011. They studied model’s faces who were at rest: not smiling or pouting, along with those whose lips were not altered by makeup. A total of 353 images were studied. The size of the models’ lips were measured, and comparisons between the upper and lower lips were determined.
Findings
The study found that from 1960 to 2011, lip size and ratio didn’t change. Researchers stated that their findings were unexpected. They stated, “If the frequently cited trend toward fuller lips truly exists, why is this not quantitatively seen in Vogue?”
Finally, the researchers said that the research may show that the fashion industry does not create a driving factor toward the rise in popularity of fuller lips, and that the rise may be due to certain celebrities playing a larger role in influencing the trend.
Dr. Thomas Wright of the Laser Lipo and Vein Center says, “I certainly find the study results interesting, especially because I have seen an increase in clients requesting lip enhancements.”
