An annual survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery suggested that almost 60% of consumers are considering a cosmetic procedure. This number is almost twice the 30% of the numbers in 2013.
The press release quoted Naomi Lawrence, MD, ASDS President as saying, “Cosmetic medical treatments continue to grow in popularity.” She continues, “One of the key reasons why is because patients trust their dermatologists and the advanced techniques and cutting-edge technologies that will improve their appearance.”
Views on Specific Procedures
The annual survey, titled the “ASDS Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures,” also rated the overall views on 10 specific cosmetic procedures and medical treatments.
One of the most highly rated among the factors was physician expertise influencing the selection of a practitioner. These factors concerning physician selection included which physicians are board certified, the level of licensure, and referrals from other physicians.
Study Findings
The top reason for considering a cosmetic procedure was “wanting to feel more confident.” According to the release, other reasons for considering a procedure included wanting “to look as young as I feel or better for my age,” and “to feel more attractive.”
Other statistics outlined in the press release indicate that ultrasound, laser, light, and radiofrequency treatments to smooth wrinkles or tighten ski were considered by 60% of the survey participants.
Others procedures that were considered included laser and light treatments for facial redness or to improve scars or skin tone. Body sculpting procedures were considered by 50% of those surveyed, and laser hair removal was considered by 48% of those surveyed.
Interestingly, excess weight was ranked the number one problem that bothered participants about their appearance. Finally, several treatment categories received a 95% or higher satisfaction rating. These included:
- Injectables
- Laser/light treatments for redness, scars or skin tone
- Procedures to tighten skin/smooth wrinkles
- Vein treatments
- Microdermabrasion
- Laser tattoo removal
