Age and Varicose Veins: Can You Be Too Young or Too Old for Varicose Vein Treatment?

age and vricose

Varicose veins are often thought to be a condition that only affects older people. However, this is a fallacy, as many young people and children can be affected by this vein condition. Interestingly, while it is possible that children can experience varicose veins, parents may miss these veins by incorrectly assuming that the bulging veins could not be varicose veins because of the child’s young age. While it is not a very common condition in children, varicose vein treatment must occur. If left untreated varicose veins can cause more severe symptoms and even tissue damage.

Varicose Vein Treatment for Children

Because advanced varicose veins can become a very serious medical condition, it is very important that possible varicose veins in children be correctly diagnosed and treated. A knowledgeable vein specialist will perform a clinical evaluation that may include an ultrasound scan as part of the diagnosis. The treatment that may be required will be based upon the severity of the condition and the results of the testing. Children and younger adults with varicose veins will respond the same way as adults to treatment. These treatments can include:

  • Compression stockings — These are usually used for milder cases.
  • Sclerotherapy — Used for smaller varicose veins. The Sclerotherapy solution is injected into the affected veins to cause them to close.
  • Foam Sclerotherapy — This treatment uses a foam that is injected into larger veins.
  • Laser surgery — This is a newer type of procedure that uses bursts of light/energy to close the veins.

For more advanced stages of varicose veins, treatments can include ambulatory phlebectomy or endoscopic vein surgery.

Too Old for Varicose Vein Treatment?

While we’ve discussed that children can get treatment for varicose veins, some may be wondering if they are too old for treatment. The overall answer is a resounding, “No!” The risk for developing varicose veins rises as we age. Some just accept these veins and the related symptoms as a normal part of aging. However, there is no reason your age should be a factor for living with swollen or painful legs.

Says Dr. Thomas Wright, “There is absolutely no reason that an older individual should not consider treatment for varicose veins.” He continues, “Today, people are staying healthy and active, and at Laser Lipo and Vein Center, we provide treatments and procedures, including those for varicose veins, that can keep them that way.” If you are concerned about varicose veins, please contact us to schedule an appointment!
