Many women consider breast augmentation for many different reasons. No matter the reason, it is usually a great way to gain self-confidence and self esteem. In the past, breast implants was the main procedure to increase bust size. However, there are several problems that can occur with implants.
Most implants are made of silicone, which may seem like a safe substance; however, the possibility of implants rupturing can cause serious medical complications. Other complication or risks include:
- An uneven or asymmetrical look
- Atrophy
- Pain
- Displacement or shifting of the implant
- Necrosis
- Sensation changes in the breast and/or nipple area
Natural Breast Augmentation: The Alternative
Today, there is an advanced breast augmentation procedure that does not come with these serious risks. Natural breast augmentation through fat transfer is considered a great option to implants. During a natural breast augmentation, fat is harvested from an area of the body that has excess fat deposits using a liposuction procedure. This provides an additional benefit that the harvest site is smoothed and contoured.
The growth factors from your own platelets added to the harvested fat cells used in fat transfer augmentation increase the survival of the fat cell. The purified cells are then injected and molded into the breasts to increase their size.
Because a patient’s own cells are used to augment the breasts, the results are far more natural looking than those with implants. There is no risk of rejection or any type of allergic reaction, however there is a limit to amount of breast size that can be achieved with the transfer. An increase of half a cup size to full cup size is average for each transfer procedure.
What are the Risks?
There are a few risks associated with fat transfer augmentation such as over-absorption of the fat, as well as the possibility of shape irregularities. These risks will be discussed during a pre-operative consultation. Dr. Wright will also go over ways to avoid these risks. The recovery time is short — usually one to three days. Any associated swelling and/or soreness will usually dissipate within a few weeks. Most patients are able to return to a normal routine with in a couple of weeks; however, strenuous exercise or activities should be avoided for a longer period of time.
Says Dr. Thomas Wright, medical director of Laser Lipo and Vein Center, “We have seen great results using this fat transfer technique. We see far better results that have more natural appearances, as well as a natural feel.”
