Top 5 Tips for Avoiding Sun Burns: Going Above and Beyond Sun Screen

5 tips sunburn

We all understand the important role that sunscreen plays in protecting our skin. However, there are several other steps you should think about to provide additional protection to your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. By protecting your skin, you can maintain a youthful look, as well as take steps toward the prevention of skin cancer.

Prevention of Skin Cancer by Covering Up

When you go outside, it is important to cover up. This may seem counterproductive when you are trying to catch some rays, but it is an important step, especially for those that may be at higher risk for sunburn. Even if you don’t choose to completely cover up, you should wear a wide-brimmed hat that will deflect the sun’s rays away from your face.

Avoid the Sun During Certain Hours

The rays of the sun are strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. so it is a good idea to remain indoors during this time, or find a shady spot.

Protect Your Lips

Often, we find ourselves slathering on the sunscreen, and then forget about our lips, which are very sensitive to the sun. Protect your lips by applying a lip balm with an SPF rating of 15 or higher. And just like sunscreen, don’t forget to apply it often.

And Don’t Forget Your Scalp

The area around the hairline, along with your scalp, also needs protection. Use a spray-on sunscreen as these absorb into the scalp better than a cream, and again, use a hat for added protection.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Sun exposure and higher summer temperatures can lead to dehydration. Not only can this cause symptoms such as headaches and dizziness, lack of water can adversely affect your skin. When you are out and about on a sunny day, make sure you drink plenty of water.
